Chamonix has been a place of pure emotion for generations of climbers, skiers and mountain lovers. Its glaciers, granite peaks, impressive summits makes it one of the most visited naturel sights in the world.
This destination already had a reputation long before the advent of skiing. From 1770 English tourists flocked to Chamonix to admire the la Mer de Glace and made the first ascents to the summits of Chamonix. It was during this period that the first hotels and other holiday accommodation were built.
The 1924 Olympic games marked the development of skiing in Chamonix with the construction of the first mechanical ski- lifts: the Bossons glacier chairlift, the le Brévént and the Aiguille du Midi cablecars. Since then, Chamonix has continued its tourism development while conserving the beauty of its natural environment.

Chamonix, summer and winter
Thanks to its high altitude, Chamonix profits year round from optimal snow cover. It is not uncommon that the ski season begins at the end of November and continues through May with the last descents of the Vallée Blanche.
It is in the summer that the mountains are at their most beautiful in Chamonix and that the contrast of the elements is at its most striking: torrents, sparkling glaciers, granite peaks, and green alpine pastures.
Mountaineering in Chamonix
Chamonix is the world capital of mountaineering. You just need to read the books by Roger Frison-Roche in order to rediscover the atmosphere of the first alpine expeditions and achievements. Since Balmat and Saussure, experienced or neophyte climbers have taken on the challenge of climbing the Mont-Blanc. Leisure climbing can also be arranged with superb sunny trails in the Aiguilles Rouges or the Aiguilles de Chamonix.
Chamonix organizes one of the biggest trail races; the ultra-trail. At the end of August, thousands of runners take on the challenge of the Tour du Mont-Blanc: 189 km in one go, 9000 metres of uphill incline, in under 48 hours… For hikes, Chamonix is one of the stages of the Tour du Mont-Blanc.
